David Roberts (1796-1864) fue uno de los primeros artistas británicos en viajar a #españa y documentar su patrimonio cultural. Solo David Wilkie le había precedido, comenzando a difundir desde 1828 el entusiasmo por lo que él llamó la "reserva de caza salvaje de Europa", tras descubrir los tesoros del Prado y el Escorial. Además, la publicación de Los Cuentos de la Alhambra de Washington Irving, que coincidió con la visita de Roberts, despertó un gran interés por la #arquitectura hispanomusulmana. Roberts llegó a la capital de #andalucia a principios de mayo. Sevilla, escribió, "supera con creces mis expectativas más optimistas. Está rodeada de murallas moriscas, flanqueada por torres, todas en perfecto estado de conservación… la catedral… es una de las estructuras más pintorescas y magníficas del mundo. David Roberts was among the first British artists to travel to #spain and document its unique culture. Only David Wilkie had been ahead of him, in 1828. Having encountered the treasures of the Prado & the Escorial, Wilkie referred to the country as the ‘wild unpoached game reserve of Europe’. In #literature as well, Roberts’ visit coincided with the publication of Washington Irving’s Tales of the Alhambra, which created a surge in interest in the Hispano-moresque #architecture of Southern Spain. Roberts reached Seville in early May. Seville, he wrote, ‘far exceeds my most sanguine expectations. It is surrounded by Moorish walls, flanked by towers, all in perfect preservation… the #cathedral … is one of the most picturesque and magnificent structures in the world.
